Area around Derrynane House

Derrynane House

Derrynane House was the home of Irish politician and statesman Daniel O'Connell. Daniel O'Connell was born in 1775 and founded the Catholic Association in 1823 with the aim of achieving political equality for Catholics. The house is located on the Iveragh Peninsula on the Ring of Kerry near the village of Derrynane.  The house displays many relics of O'Connell s life and career.
Today some 120 hectares of the lands of Derrynane, together with Derrynane House, make up Derrynane National Historic Park.

Derrynane House was opened as a museum in 1967, the house is furnished with family portraits, writings and a great many items relating to Daniel O'Connell, from the duelling pistols used when he killed rival John D'Esterre in 1815 and the black glove he wore in remembrance ever since, to the fabulous gold chariot he rode through Dublin amidst jubilant crowds on his release from prison. A video presentation outlines the life and times of the great man.

Most popular tourist attraction is the Puck Fair. It is held on the 10th, 11th and 12th August. Every year a group of people go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat. This goat is brought back to the town and the Queen of Puck Fair crowns the goat "King Puck". The goat is then put into a small cage on a high stand in the middle of the town. From this moment the fair has started. There is singing and dancing. On the opening day is a horse fair and on the second day a cattle fair.
